The full name of the Temple is Sri Soundaravalli Thaayar Samedha Sri Soundararaja Perumal Temple in Sundaraperumal Koil near Papanasam which is close to Kumbakonam Town. The ancient name of Sundara Perumal Kovil is Sundara Chola Vinnagaram. This is an East facing Temple with a five tiered Rajagopuram. As Devotees cross the East facing Rajagopuram there is a North facing Thumbikkai Alwar's Idol just beneath the Rajagopuram. Then there is a eight pillared Mandapam on top of which are the East facing Idols of Sri Soundararaja Perumal flanked by His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. On either side there are Idols of Sri Garudalwar. Within this eight pillared Mandapam is an East facing Sthambam which is similar to that of Ariyalur Kaliya Perumal Temple. Next to is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Garudalwar who is looking towards the Moolathanam.

Then is a multi pillared Mandapam atop which the coloured stucco Idol of Sri Soundararaja Perumal is seen along with His Consorts. Flanking them are the coloured Idols of two Garudalwars. Beyond this multi pillared Mandapam is another smaller East facing three tiered Rajagopuram. The Temple's Sanctum Sanctorum is East facing and at the threshold are two coloured Idols of the Dwara Baalakas who stand guard. The Presiding Deity of Sri Soundararaja Perumal is seen East facing and standing majestically along with His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. It is believed that Sri Indran in order to get rid of His Saaba Vimochanam had offered Pumpkin to the God. Since none were there to receive the Pumpkin as an offering Sri Soundararaja Perumal Himself came in disguise and accepted the offering. The inner walls of the Sanctum Sanctorum is very unique and different from other Perumal Temples since the black Idols of Rishis, Sages, Sri Brahmma, Sri Sooryan, Sri Chandran, Navagrahas along with Sri Paramasivan are embossed on the inner walls making it look spectacular to the eyes of the Devotees. Similarly God Shiva is not seen here as a Shiva Lingam but instead is seen in the Human form as Sri Paramasivam. It is said that the Presidind Deity of Sri Soundararaja Perumal is Omnipotent and Mighty in restoring the Lost Properties and Wealth of His Devotees.

The Consort of this Temple is known as Sri Soundaravalli Thaayar and Her Shrine is seen in the outer peripheral. Sri Soundaravalli Thaayar is seen in Her East facing Shrine in a seated posture. Similarly the Temple has another East facing Sub Shrine in its outer peripheral in which Sri Andal Nachiyar is seen in a standing posture. Within this Sub Shrine is a small black Idol of Sri Karuppa Swamy who is not enclosed by any door or whatsoever and He is seen West facing in a standing posture. He is seen free since it is believed that every night He goes from here to Madurai Kallazhagar Temple to guard there.

When Devotees circumambulate the Temple they can find a coloured Idol of Sri Ramanujar who is seen North facing and to His rear there are steps like structure which resembles a golu padi. This is used on special occasions like Navarathri. The multi pillared Moolasthana Mandapam has a North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Raahu and Sri Kethu. There is a North facing Sub Shrine in which the Idols of Sri Gopalan, Sri Rukmini and Sri Sathyabama are seen together. The Alwars comprising of Sri Nammalwar, Sri Thirumangai Alwar, Sri Ramanujar, Sri Manaavala Maamunigal and Sri Kannabiran are seen together in a solitary West facing Sub Shrine. Sri Hanuman or Sri Anjaneya Swami is seen in a standing posture in His West facing Sub Shrine. Likewise Sri Kannabiran is seen in His South facing Sub Shrine. Similarly Sri Yoga Narasimhar too is seen South facing in His Sub Shrine. Sri Senai Mudhaliyar is also seen in His South facing Sub Shrine.

The Temple has a Vaahana Mandapam in which various Temple Vaahanams are seen. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is Vanni Maram. The Temple has its own Madapalli. There is a small Nadhavanam available but since there is a huge vacant space they can improve the Nandhavan even more. Chithirai Brahmmothsavam, All Puratasi Saturdays, Navarathri are some of the festivals that are celebrated in a grand manner.
