Koranattu Karuppur is a place located very close to Kumbakonam. The Chola Rulers called this place as Karambhai Naadu. With passage of time Karambhai Naadu was called as Koranaadu or Koranattu Karuppur. It is believed that all the Devas came here to Worship Shivan and Parvathy. That time Shivan revealed Himself as a handsome youth and hence was called as Sri Sundareswarar. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Sundareswarar and He is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam and is considered as an incarnation of God Shiva. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Abirami Ambal. Sage Agasthiyar is said to have come to this Temple and after bathing in the Temple Tank He is said to have Worshipped Sri Sundareswarar. Sri Kuberar is also said to have come to this Temple and Worshipped due to which He got immense Wealth and Property. This Temple is locally Worshipped as Petti Kaali Amman Temple. Several centuries ago a huge wooden box was washed away in floods and came floating to this place through River Cauvery. The locals then grew anxious and gathered around the woooden box and opened it with curiousity. On opening it they found a wooden Moorthy whose upper part was Goddess Kaali. From then on this Kali was Prayed with reverence She had 8 Arms and looked charming and hence She was refered as Sri Sundara Maha Kaali or Sri Petti Kali Amman. She is taken out of the box and goes out on a procession once a year during the Uthirayanam period. This Temple is also considered to be one of the Thevara Vaipu Sthalam. It is believed that This Temple was built by Chola Kings and later renovated by Kulothunga Chola III. Like other Temple this Temple also has a Dwajastambam and a Sacred Tank and Devotees are allowed to take a holy Dip in it. Chithirai Brahmotsavam, Adi Pooram, Vinayagar Chaturthi, Avani, Puratasi Navarathri, Skandasashti, Thirukarthigai are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is one of the Pancha Krosha Sthalam and is built in the banks of River Kaveri. This Temple is considered as a Praarthana Sthalam.
