Alamathi is located very close to Redhills in Chennai. There is a North facing Welcome Arch for this Temple which is seen next to Sri Thangavel Murugan Temple. Devotees may have to travel for a short distance before reaching Sri Alarmatheeshwarar Temple in Alamathi. The full name of the Temple is Sri Thai Mangalambikai Samedha Sri Thanthai Alamatheeswarar Temple. This Temple does not have any Rajagopuram but instead there is an East facing Gopuram along with the gate leading to the Temple. This Gopuram has Idols of Shivan and Parvathy along with a Rishaba Vaahanam. Flanking them are two coloured Idols of Sri Ganapathy and Sri Murugan. On entering there is a North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Maheswara Ganapathy. Facing this Sub Shrine is a Neivedhya Peedam and a Moonjur Vaahanam. To the rear of this Sub Shrine is a small West facing Kalai Arangam built in the name of Sri Mouna Guru Swamigal. There are coloured paintings of Sri Shivan, Sri Parvathy and Sri Natarajar on the walls of the Kalai Arangam. Close to this is a small Sub Shrine which is closed most times and this Sub Shrine contains a Shiva Lingam.
At the outset there is a small Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a West facing Nandhi Vaahanam beneath a four pillared Mandapam facing the Moolasthanam. This Nandhi Bhagwan is known here as Sri Maha Nandhi. There is a Gopuram in which Sri Shivan, Sri Parvathy, Sri Vinayagar, Sri Murugan, Sri Agasthiyar are seen in along his Disciple of Sri Agasthiyar. The Moolasthana Mandapam has multiple pillars and on entering there is a small West facing Sri Vinayagar's Idol. Heading towards the Moolasthanam there is another small Nandhi Bhagwan. Standing guard on either side of the threshold of the Moolasthanam are two huge black Dwara Baalaka Idols. Near the left Dwara Baalaka Idol the Idol of Sri Valapuri Vinayagar is seen and near the right Dwara Baalaka Idol is an Idol of Sri Bala Subramaniyar and both these Idols are East facing. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Alamatheeswarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam. He is said to be Omnipotent and looks resplendent in the background of the naturally lit oil lamps. This Swayambhu Shiva Lingam is believed to be more than 3000 years old. It is said that initially Sri Agasthiyar and then his Disciple Sri Marthanda Munivar had Prayed here regularly. It is said that apart from Sage Agasthiyar, his Disciple Marthanda Munivar, the Pancha Pandavas had come here and had Worshipped the Presiding Deity of Sri Alarmatheeswarar or Sri Alamatheeswarar. Around the Koshtam are the Idols of Sri Narthana Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Brahmma, Sri Chandikeshwarar and Sri Agasthiyar. Devotees can circumambulate the Moolasthanam from within.
The Consort of this Temple is known as Sri Thai Mangalambikai and She is seen in Her South facing Shrine in the inner peripheral. Sri Thai Mangalambigai is seen in a standing posture displaying Abhaya Hastam. In the inner peripheral there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Gangai Amman who is seen holding a Pot. The Sub Shrine of Sri Ashtabuja Durgai amman is also seen in the inner peripheral. Sri Ashtabuja Durgai Amman is seen North facing and in a standing posture with 8 hands. Beneath Her Divine Feet a Srichakkaram could be seen. Likewise the Sub Shrine of Sri Kala Bhairavar is also seen here. In His South facing Sub Shrine Sri Kaala Bhairavar is seen in a standing posture. The Urchavamoorthi Idols of this Temple are seen together in a separate South facing Sub Shrine. Within this Sub Shrine there is a Vellai Erukku dried up root which naturally depicts the Image of Vinayagar. This is a real wonder of this Temple and the Vellai Erukku is considered as the Sthala Viruksham. Close to the Ambal's Shrine is a huge wooden Oonjal or Swing which is used during festive occasions. The Temple has a Yaaga Saalai close to the Sub Shrine of Sri Urchavamoorthies. There is a Navagraha Sannadhi which is beautifully placed on a Lotus Podium attracting the eyes of all Devotees circumambulating. This area also has a Sub Shrine of Sri Abhaya Anjaneya Swamy who is seen West facing and in a standing posture. This Temple has an attractive Hundi or Undiyal in the form of a Shiva Lingam attracting the attention of the Devotees.
The outer peripheral of this Temple has a Jeeva Saamadhi of Sri Marthanda Munivar who was an ardent disciple of Sage Agasthiyar. His Jeeva Samadhi could be viewed through a gaping hole. Likewise the outer peripheral has an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Ayyappa Swamy. Facing His Sub Shrine is an Elephant Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. At the far end of the outer peripheral there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Mouna Guru Swamigal who developed this Temple to a great extent. A Shiva Lingam is seen in this Sub Shrine and beneath this Shiva Lingam is the Jeeva Samaadhi of Sri Mouna Guru Swamigal. The entire Sub Shrine is within a multi pillared Mandapam. They have palnted a huge Vel or Spear overlooking the Jeeva Samaadhi of Sri Mouna Guru Swamigal. There is a Guru Chakkra Peedam in a four pillared Sub Shrine on the outer peripheral. A huge Neem and Peepal Tree are seen intertwined and the Sacred Kumkum and Turmeric is smeared all around it. Beneath these Divine Trees is an East facing Sub Shrine in which an Idol of Sri Vinayagar is seen flanked by Sri Naga Lingam and Sri Naga Kannigai. There is Thulabaaram facility available for the sake of the Devotees. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is a Vellai Erukku.
The Temple has its own Trust Office which functions from within the Temple premises. There is a huge Temple Kitchen or Madapalli and an Annadhana Koodam to serve food for all the Devotees on auspicious days. The Temple has a Divine Well for its use. The Temple also has a Ghoshala. This Temple is built on a whopping area of land and it has a huge compund wall too. The rotten and dead Trees and Sapplings are being stacked and kept in the open area. The Temple authorities pay attention to this and see that these are removed forthwith. Instead fresh Plants, Sapplings and Trees could be planted so that it gives a garden like appearence. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
