Elambayankottur is also spelt as Elumiyankottur or Ilumbayankottur. This is a far flung village quite a distance away from nearby Perambakkam and Tiruvallur. Elambayankottur is very famous for its Shivan Temple known as Sri Deivanayageswarar or Sri Deivanatheshwarar or Sri Arambeswarar. The full name of the Temple is Sri Kanagakusambikai Samedha Sri Deivanayageshwarar Temple. The Consort here is known as Sri Kanakusambikai or Sri Kodendhumulaiyammai or Sri Kathirmullaiyammai or Sri Thayeenumnallal. This is one of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalam. This Temple has been highly sung by Thirugana Sammandhar. The Temple has a West facing iron gate. Apart from this gate there is another small West facing gate too through which Devotees can enter the Temple. In the outer flank there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Ganapathy and another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar.
There is no Rajagopuram for this Temple. Though the Temple gate is West facing Devotees can enter through this gate but can enter the Main Temple through the East. There is a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram but the Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and the Nandhi Vaahanam are seen at ground level unlike other Shivan Temple where they are placed on top of a podium. There is a small Gopuram leading to the Moolasthanam and on top of the Gopuram there are stucco Idols of Shivan, Parvathy in the centre with Sri Vinayagar and Sri Murugan on either side of them. Just before the Moolasthanam there is a Sri Ganapathy Idol on the left and an Idol of Sri Subramaniyar flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devasena who are seen together on the right.
In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Deivanayageswarar is seen in the form of a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam believed to have been made out of a Kondrai Maalai which accidentally flew of the neck of Shiva whilst He was on the verge of going out to the battlefield to wage a war. This Presiding Deity is known as Theenda Thirumeni and He is untouched even by the Archagas or Gurukkals on normal days. He is totally covered by a dazzling Naagabharanam and the Gurukkals even while garlanding Him use an elongated stick to do so. Through the Vibhuthi eyelets or eyeholes one could see the red tinge of the Presiding Deity. Around the Koshtam are the Idols of Sri Nirutha Ganapathy, Sri Yoga Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Maha Vishnu, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai and Sri Chandikeshwarar. The Yoga Dhakshinamoorthy in this Temple is prominent and attracts more number of Devotees. The Moolasthana Mandapam has been pasted beautifully with coloured wallpapers of Shivan Parvathy and their Wedding, Murugan, Panchamuga Vinayagar etc. Facing the Moolasthanam is an Idol of Siva Suryan. There is a North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Naalvar which includes Appar, Sundarar, Thirugnana Sammandhar and Manickavasagar.
The inner peripheral of the Temple has an East facing Sub Shrine for Sri Arambeshwarar who is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam. There is another similar East facing Sub Shrine for the Naaga Devathas. There is a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Kala Bhairavar within the same inner peripheral. The Consort is known as Sri Kanakakusambikai and She occupies a separate Shrine which is South facing. Sri Kanakakusambikai is seen in a standing posture atop a Chakra Peedam. On the outer flank of the Temple there is a Jeeva Samaadhi of Sri Swayamprakasa Desika Sachidananda Swamy and a few East facing Naaga Devatha Idols are seen. Most sides of the Temple are flanked by Pushkaranis. The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is known as Mara Malligai and the Sacred Tank or Pushkarani are known as Chandra Theertham, Mallikai Theertham, Ramba Theertham, Naga Theertham, Bhoothagana Theertham and Thamarai Theertham. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri, Sankadahara Chathurthi, Kirthikai, Shasti are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
This Temple is supposed to have been built during the Pallava regime. The later Cholas under Kulothungan II and Rajadhirajan II had a big hand in promoting this Temple. Likewise the Vijayanagara Rulers had a great penchant towards this Temple and promoted it as much as they can. This Temple attracts a lot of Devotees during GURU PERYARCHI DAY and is therefore a GURU PARIHAARA STHALAM.
