Thiruthani Murugan Temple is located on a hill and the Presiding Deity is known as Thiruttani Murugan or Sri Subramania Swamy. This is the fifth Temple among the Arupadai Veedu Temple. In ancient times Thiruttani was known as Kundruthoradal or Shanthipuri or Siruthani or Kalurikkunram or Thiruthanigai. From the foothill of the Temple to the hilltop the Devotees have to climb 365 steps which obviously denotes the 365 calendar days of a year. It is a very ancient Temple dating back to pre Sangam days. Anyhow it was greatly partonized and looked after by the Rulers of Vijayanagara Kingdom and Saint Nakeerar had sung in praise of this Temple in his verses Thirumurugatrupadai. It is believed that Saint Arunagirinathar has praised this hill skyhigh and had chosen this place of Worship. Sri Muthusamy Dikshithar a great Carnatic Musician had sung about this Temple too. The main Temple of Sri Subramaniya Swamy could be reached either by footsteps or through a motorable ghat road for which they levy a small fee. There are two Welcome Arches at the foothill leading to the Temple. At the base of the ghat road there is a Sub Shrine of Sri Vazhithunai Vinayagar who has to be prayed first.
A new 9 tiered East facing Rajagopuram of 122 feet height is being built and it would be open for the Devotees very soon. There is a huge Vel or Spear embedded on this nine tiered Rajagopuram. The Gopuram atop the Neivedhya Peedam has 6 different coloured Idols depicting the Arupadai Veedu. The Arupadai Veedu are as follows: 1) Swamimalai, 2) Thiruparankundram, 3) Palani, 4) Thiruthanigai or Thiruttani, 5) Pazhamudhircholai and 6) Thiruchendur. The top of this Sub Shrine has a stucco Idol of Sri Subramaniya Swamy who is seen flanked by Valli and Devasena. Facing this Sub Shrine is a small Rajagopuram which is East facing and three tiered. The Temple has an East facing Sub Shrine for a Vel or Spear. Close to this is a Sacred place where Uppu (Rocksalt) and Milagu (Pepper) are offered to the Temple. There is an Anayaa Vilakku which is lighted 24X7. This Temple has two types of Darshan for its Devotees. The first is a Free Darshan in which Devotees may have to wade through serapentaine railing before reaching the Moolasthanam. The second type of Darshan is a Paid Darshan for Rs.100/-. The Temple Admin have to be appreciated since they have displayed a list of Gurukkals with their Mobile Number who can perform the Archanai in Tamil. This emphasis is due ot the fact that Sri Subramaniya Swamy or Sri Murugan is often fondly known as a Tamizh Kadavul. The name of the Gurukkal with their Phone Numbers displayed are as follows: Ravi Gurukkal 94432 82414, Nagaraja Gurukkal 94432 82432, Venkatesa Gurukkal 94432 29673, Ganesh Gurukkal 94459 57198, Rajasekara Gurukkal 94437 38577 and Sivakumar Gurukkal 94446 44046. The Temple has a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Yaanai Vaahanam or Elephant Vaahanam kept in a small four pillared Mandapam looking Eastwards away from the Moolasthanam. On either side of this Yaanai Vaahanam are two Vinayagar Idols who are East facing and they are situated within the same four pillared Mandapam. The Temple's corridor has several multiple pillars which are painted. Even the ceiling of the corridor is beautifully painted with contrast colours.
Intially there are two black Dwara Baalakas on either side on the way to the Moolasthanam. Devotees may have to circumambulate to reach the Moolasthanam. At the outset there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Valli who is seen in a standing posture. After crossing this Sub Shrine is the main Shrine or the Moolasthanam of Sri Subramaniya Swamy or Sri Murugan. Standing guard before this Sanctum Sanctorum are two black Dwara Baalaka Idols. In the Moolasthanam the Presiding Deity of Sri Subramaniya Swamy is seen in a standing posture facing East. It is noteworthy to mention here that the Presiding Deity of Sri Subramaniya Swamy does not carry or hold any Vel in His hand. This is due to the fact that He had killed Demon Tharakasuran or Soorapadman in Thiruchendur and had come to Thiruttani to mitigate His anger. This is the place where He was fortunate enough to marry Sri Valli. A multi pillared Valli Thiru Kalyana Mandapam is seen in the outer peripheral of the Temple. The next Sub Shrine is that of Sri Devasena who is seen East facing and in a standing posture. Devotees may have to climb down four to five steps to reach the next level of the premises. Here Sri Subramaniya Swamy who is known as Urchavar is seen East facing and flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devasena. They have hung beautiful coloured portraits of Arupadai Veedu Murugan which are all South facing. Then there is a West facing Yaaga Saalai with a wooden door. Next is a South facing Sub Shrine with a stucco Idol of Sri Arumugam on its Gopuram. In this Sub Shrine Sri Arumugar is seen along with Valli and Devasena. There are two Dwara Baalakas etched on the gold platings before this Sub Shrine. Next to this is the all important South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Aabathsahaya Vinayagar. Here too there are two etched Dwara Baalakas on the gold plating before His Sannadhi. Then there are West facing Idols of Sri Arunagirinathar, Sri Veerabadrar, Sri Veeradheeran, Sri Veerandhagar, Sri Veera Marthandan, Sri Veera Raakadhan, Sri Veera Purandhan, Sri Veera Maheswaran, Sri Veera Mahendran, Sri Veerakesari and Sri Veerabahu. Apart from Sri Arunagirinathar here all the other 9 Idols are known as Nava Veerargal or Nine Warriors. The Idol of Sri Suryamoorthy is also seen West facing. The Sandal Paste smeared on the Moolavar is considered as a Panacea for all types of ailments since it is believed that this wonder Sandal heals every thing when applied and also when drunk. This is considered so because of the fact that this Sandal was ground in the Pestle and Morter that Sri Indran had offered.
The Sthala Viruksham of this Temple is known as Maguda Maram. The Sacred Tanks or Pushkaranis are known as Indra Theertham, Saravana Poigai, Saraswathi Theertham, Madachetty Kulam and Nallan Kulam. The outer peripheral of the Temple has a booking counter to enable Devotees to book various Sevas. There are Rest Rooms and a Cloak Room for the Devotees to keep their luggages. A multi pillared Vaahana Mandapam is also seen. Facilities exists in this Temple for Tonsuring and for Ear Boring. Marriages too are conducted on production of adequate certificates to that effect. Several Devasthana Cottages and Hotel Rooms are available at the foothill of the Temple for outstation Devotees. The Temple has two distinct Vehicular parking meant for Four Wheelers and Two Wheelers. There are shops selling Divine Souvenirs, Pooja Articles, Flowers, Garlands etc. Likewise there are other Shops too selling eatables like Tea, Coffee, Chat Items etc. Aadi Kiruthigai, Thai Poosam, Shasti, Thirukarthigai are some of the festivals that are celebrated with great fanfare. This Temple is known for celebrating Kanda Shasti but at the same time the Temple do not conduct Soora Samhaaram. Kaavadi is another form of thankgiving to Sri Murugan by His Devotees.
