Chinna Kavanam is on the outskirts of Ponneri in Thiruvallur District. Chinna Kavanam in ancient times was mentioned as Chathurvedapuram. The full name of the Temple is Sri Ashtothravalli Samedha Sri Sri Nootretteeswarar Temple. This Temple was built by the Chola King Nandhi Varman on the Banks of River Aranya. The Temple is located in a street in Chinnakavanam. This Temple has a three tiered South facing Rajagopuram. On entering the Temple though the South Rajagopuram there is a huge Viruksham known as Eru Azhinjal Maram around which a square podium is built with steel railings. Beneath this Eru Azhinjal Maram is a West facing Swayambhu Vinayagar known as Sri Angola Vinayagar and beside Him are a few more Naga Devatha Idols. The History behind this is that Sage Agasthiyar had a dream in which God ordered Him to install 108 Shiva Lingam in this place since it would be construed on par with visiting Kashi or Varanasi. Sage Agasthiyar followed this dream with commitment and installed all the 108 Shiva Lingams in the following 108 days. On installing the 108th Shiva Lingam all the Shiva Lingam joined together to make a single Vinayagar Idol which was known as Sri Angola Vinayagar. Thus Angola Vinayagar got His name. There is a wide belief that Devotees who come and Pray to Sri Angola Ganapathy and offer Vada Maalai would be Blessed and would attain all their desires. This Eru Azhinjal Maram is believed to be more than 2900 years old. It is also known as Angola Maram in Sanskrit whereas its Tamil equivalent is Eru Azhinjal Maram. It is strange to hear that the seeds of this Angola Maram falls to the ground but quickly adapts itself and gets stuck to the main Angola Maram making it look massive. To the rear of this is a West facing Sub Shrine of Sri Siva Suryan close to which the huge Temple Bell is seen.
On entering the Maha Mandapam there is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Maha Ganapathy. Next to this is another East facing Sub Shrine in which Sri Subramaniyar is seen flanked by His Consorts Valli and Devasena. Actually the Moolasthana Mandapam is built South facing but the Moolavar Sannadhi of the Presiding Deity of Sri Nootreteeshwarar or Sri Ashtothreeswarar is seen East facing. Sri Nootretteshwarar is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam and facing His Sannadhi is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam. The Urchavamoorthy Sannadhi is next to the Shrine of Sri Nootretteeswarar. The other East facing Sub Shrine is that of Sri Chathurvedapureeswarar who is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Facing the Sub Shrine of Sri Chathurvedapureeshwarar is a Nandhi Vaahanam which is West facing. His Consort is known as Sri Sivagami Ambal and She is seen in Her South facing Sub Shrine in a standing posture. There is another South facing Sub Shrine in which Sri Natarajar, Sivagami Ambal and Manickavasagar are seen together. Around the Koshtam of the Presiding Deity of Sri Nootretteeswarar there are Idols of Naatiya Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahmma, Durgai and Chandikeshwarar.
The Consort is known as Sri Ashtothravalli Ambal or Sri Nootretteeswari Ambal. The Shrine of Sri Ashtothravalli Ambal is East facing and is situated in a multi pillared Mandapam. The Gopuram of this Shrine has an East facing coloured Idol of Sri Ashtothravalli Ambal who is flanked on either side by a Simha Vaahanam. In the East facing Moolasthanam Sri Ashtrothavalli Ambal is seen in a standing posture. There is a general belief that single Devotees who come and offer a Rose Garland to Ambal and Pray would soon get Blessed with a Happy Married Life.
The outer peripheral of the Temple has a North facing Vaahana Mandapam and close to this is an East facing Alankaara Mandapam. The rear wall of the Temple has exquisite paintings of Sri Natarajar with Sivagami Ambal and also a huge black Shiva Lingam. There is a South facing Sri Kaala Bhairavar Sannadhi in the outer peripheral. Close to this is the Navagraha Sannadhi. There is also a Temple Kitchen or Madapalli and close to this is the Temple's Office. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is Eru Azinjal Maram or Angola Maram and the Pushkarani or Sacred Tank is known as River Aaranyam. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
