Sri Vara Muktheeswarar Sivan Temple is located in a place called Pudhu Erumaivettipalayam which is close to Karanodai in Tiruvallur District. The Road leading from Karanodai to Puthu Erumaivettipalayam is muddy and full of stones and pebbles. This Temple is supposed to be around 2000 years old and the full name of the Temple is Sri Kamakshi Udanurai Sri Varamuktheeswarar Temple. This Temple is seen with a South facing Rajagopuram of four tiers. Since the Temple has dual entrances Devotees can also enter the Temple premises through the Eastern gate. The Eastern entrance has an iron gate with a Welcome Arch and there is a stucco Idol depicting Shivan, Parvathy, Vinayagar and Murugan.
Sri Varamukthiswarar Temple is anomalous from other Shivan Temples because it does not any Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram. Instead there is a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam is seen beneath a four pillared Mandapam looking towards the Moolasthanam. The coloured Gopuram here carries the stucco Idol of Shivan. There isn't any Dwara Baalaka Idols standing guard before the Moolasthanam but instead two Dwara Baalaka Images are embossed on either side on the base of the gold plated threshold seen before the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Vara Muktheeswarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva is found in the form of a Shiva Lingam and looks dazzling to the eyes of the onlooking Devotees gathered. One important factor of this Moolasthanam is that an Oil Lamp which is lit within the Moolasthanam does not flicker or waver under any circumstances and is seen steadfast. Adjoining the Moolavar Sannadhi is a South facing Sub Shrine with a beautifully carved wooden door in which Sri Natarajar and His Consort Sri Sivagami Ambal is seen. It is believed that there was a tunnel leading from this Sub Shrine to elsewhere in those days. To the left of the Moolasthanam is an entrance through which Devotees can reach the multi pillared Mandapam of Sri Kamakshi Ambal. The Shrine of Sri Kamakshi Ambal looks resplendent as it normally does. The threshold leading to this Moolasthanam is fully gold plated and there are Images of two Dwara Baalakis which are embossed on either sides of the gold platings. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Consort Sri Kamakshi Ambal is seen standing majestically East facing. Far outside Her Shrine is a Neivedhya Peedam and a Simha Vaahanam which are placed on an elevated podium. It seems that Her Simha Vaahanam peeps through the gaping hole found there as though the Simha Vaahanam is looking towards the Moolasthanam of Sri Kamakshi Ambal. The walls outside the Ambal Sannadhi has different portraits depicting how the Temple was and looked like a few centuries ago.
Devotees have two options to enter this Temple. Devotees coming through the South facing Rajagopuram can Pray to the Ambal first and then have a Darshan of the Moolavar whereas Devotees who enter through the Eastern gate can make use of the Moolavar entrance from the Nandhi Vaahanam side and then can visit the Ambal Sannadhi subsequently. The Gopuram from the Ambal Sannadhi side looks so eye captivating and resplendent since the Idols are painted in contrast colours. These Idols comprises of Shivan, Parvathy, Vinayagar and Murugan who are seen centrally. The other Idoils flanking them are Vanmeekar Siddhar, Pambaati Siddhar, Sivavakiya Siddhar, Bhogar, Thirumoolar, Konganar, Sattanathar, Pulipaani, Agasthiyar, Idaikaadar, Korakkar, Kuthambai, Sundaranandhan, Pathanjali, Karuvuraar, Dhanvanthri, Kamalamuni and Macchamuni. The outer peripheral of the Temple has a small East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Vasthu Kubera Vinayagar and facing this Sub Shrine is a Neivedya Peedam and a Moonjur Vaahanam. Close to this is a beautifully desgned East facing Thirukalyana Mandapam where Divine functions can be conducted with effortless ease. This Thirukalyana Mandapam's top has several gorgerous coloured Idols depicting the Kalyana Kolam of Shivan and Parvathy besides having the Idols of Brahmma and Maha Vishnu, Vinayagar and Murugan. The pillars of this Thirukalyana Mandapam has beautiful Yaali Idols on it.
There is another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Sakthi Mukthi Vinayagar in the outer peripheral. Similarly here too ther is a Neivedhya Peedam and Moonjur Vaahanam looking towards this Sub Shrine. There is a Sub Shrine of Sri Bala Murugan which is seen East facing. Within this Sub Shrine Sri Bala Murugan is seen standing all alone with a Vel and a Seval Kodi. There is a Mayil Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam looking towards this Sub Shrine of Sri Bala Murugan. The Temple has a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Kala Bhairavar in which He is seen in a standing posture. The Temple Authorities have to be appreciated for painting several Temple related details on the inner walls of the Temple which could be read easily by the Devotees to gain Divine Knowledge. The Temple also has a Madapalli and Drinking Water facilities within its premises. The Sthala Viruksham of Sri Varamuktheeswarar Temple is a Vilva Maram. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
