Kakkalur is a suburb of Tiruvallur Town. Sri Jala Narayana Perumal Temple is situated in Kakkalur. The full name of the Temple is Sri Jala Narayani Thaayar Samedha Sri Jala Narayana Perumal Temple. This Temple is dedicated to Maha Vishnu and has a Shrine for Sri Pushpavaneshwarar too and hence it is known as a Shiva Vishnu Temple. The Temple has a five tiered South facing Rajagopuram. There is a small North facing entrance through which some Devotees come. The inner side of the South facing Rajagopuram has two mini Idols of Sri Garudalwar and Sri Anjaneyar which are North facing. The Temple has a small Gopuram on top of which are the South facing coloured Idols of a reclining Maha Vishnu flanked by Sri Vinayagar and Sri Ayyappa Swamy. There are two South facing Dwara Baalaka Idols who stand guard here. Next to this Gopuram is another South facing parallel Gopuram on top of which are two Idols of Maha Vishnu and Shivan who are South facing and in a sitting posture. To the left there are several Sub Shrines of various Deities. The first East facing Sub Shrine is that of Sri Selva Vinayagar. There are two Dwara Baalakas and there is a Moonjur Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam facing this Shrine. Next is a Sub Shrine of Sri Ayyappa Swamy and there are two Dwara Baalakas. Next is an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Radha Rukmani Samedha Sri Venugopalan Sannadhi. The ceiling opposite to this Sub Shrine has a huge Umbrella type Rudraksha Pandhal which is made up of 11,000 Rudhraksham with Pancha Mugham. The electrical lights when lit accentuates the Rudraksha Pandhal to a greast extent. Next to the Sub Shrine of Sri Venugopalan Sannadhi is another East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Padmavathy Thaayar who is seen in a sitting posture. There are two Idols of two Dwara Baalakis who stand guard here. Facing Her Sub Shrine are the three West facing Idols of Sri Anjaneya Swamy, Sri Ramanujar and Sri Vedantha Desigar. The Temple has an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Srinivasa Perumal who is seen standing alone in His Shrine. There are two Dwara Baalaka Idols standing guard. Facing His Shrine is a Dwajasthambam, a Neivedhya Peedam and an Idol of Garudalwar.
Next is the Sub Shrine of Sri Pushpavaneshwarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva. Sri Pushpavaneswarar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. There are two Dwara Baalaka Idols standing guard here. Facing the Shrine of Sri Pushpavaneshwarar is a Nandhi Vaahanam, a Neivedhya Peedam and a Dwajasthambam. There is an East facing small Idol of Sri Dwaja Ganapathy at the base of this Dwajasthambam. Around the Koshtam of Sri Pushpavaneswarar the Idols of Sri Narthana Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Lingothbhavar, Sri Brahmma, Sri Durgai and Sri Chandikeshwarar. Next to the Shrine of Sri Pushpavaneswarar is His Consort 's Shrine and She is known as Sri Poonkuzhali Ambal. In Her South facing Shrine She is seen in a standing posture. There are two Dwara Baalaki Idols standing guard. Facing Her Shrine is a small Simha Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. Facing the Shrines of Sri Pushpavaneswarar and Sri Poonkuzhali Ambal are the West facing Idols of Sri Kirupanandha Variar, Sri Ramalinga Vallalar, Sri Adhi Shankarar, Sri Naagar, Sri Agathiyar, Sri Thirugnana Sammandhar, Sri Appar, Sri Manickavasage, Sri Sundarar and Sri Siva Suryan. The peripheral of the Temple has an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Kannimoola Ganapathy and facing His Sub Shrine is a Moonjur Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam. Next is the East facing Sub Shrine with glass panes in which the Urchavamoorthy Idols of the Temple are safely kept. Next to this is another East facing Sai Baba Sannadhi in which He is seen in a sitting posture. This Sannadhi has His Urchavamoorthy Idol and a pair of Divine Feet made of White Marble stone. Then there is another East facing Sub Shrine in which the Idols of Sri Kothanda Ramar, Goddeess Seetha, Lakshmana and Sri Anjaneya Swamy. Next is a twin Gopuram which comprises of two East facing Sub Shrines. The first Sub Shrine is that of Sri Subramaniyar is flanked by Valli and Devasena. There is a Mayil Vaahanam and a Neivedhya Peedam facing this Sub Shrine. The second Sub Shrine is that of Sri Kannika Parameshwari who is seen East facing and in a standing posture. There are two Dwara Baalaki Idols standing guard to Her Sub Shrine. On circumambulating further there is a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Lakshmi Hayagreevar and another South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Bhairavar and there is an entrance between these Sub Shrines through which Devotees can come and go to the Temple from its rear side. Close to this is a small North facing Sub Shrine of Sri Valampuri Vinayagar. Then comes the Navagraha enclosure.
Close to this is an West facing entrance of Sri Jala Narayana Perumal Sannadhi. This is a wonderfully designed engineering marvel in which Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen floating on a waterbed on His Adhi Seshan. His Head faces West whereas His Divine Feet are seen facing East. He looks skywards and His Divine Feet looks resplendent as though He is in a dancing posture. A point to ponder is that the Presiding Deity of Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen floating on a 11 headed Sri Adhi Seshan. Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen with four hands holding 1) Chakkarayudham, 2) Gadhayudham, 3) Sangu and 4) an Akshaya Paathiram. Just beneath the Divine Feet of the Presiding Deity is the Idol of His Consort Sri Jala Narayani Thaayar who is seen in a sitting posture on a Lotus Flower looking towards the South. The only other Temple where Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen afloat is in Kathmandu, Nepal but there too only Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen and not the Thaayar. Whereas this is the one and only Temple in the entire world where Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen in a waterbed along with His Consort Thaayar. Also in Kathmandu the Divine Feet of Sri Jala Narayana Perumal is seen in a normal manner whereas in Kakkalur His Divine Feet are seen in a Dancing Posture. On the upper side there is a Garudalwar Idol who is seen in a standing posture facing West. Likewise there is a Panchaloga Idol in which Sri Chakkarathalwar and Sri Yoga Narasimhar are seen back to back. An angled mirror is kept on top of the Waterbed and Devotees could see Sri Jala Narayana Perumal floating in the Water through this mirror. The entire Sanctum Sanctorum of Sri Jala Narayana Perumal has a temporary tin sheet roofing Devotees visiting this Temple would be dumbstruck at the sight of the Presiding Deity and other Deities found around His Waterbed. There is a Temple Office and a Shop selling all Divine Pooja Articles and Souvenirs pertaining to this Temple. The Temple has a Paramapatha Vaasal and opening of the Sorga Vaasal attracts a lot of Devotees from far and near. This Temple has two Function Halls known as Jayanthi Hall and Annai Sarojammal Sadhaabisheka Hall to conduct functions and festivals. Vaikunda Ekadesi, Vinayagar Chathurthi, Vaikasi Visakam, Pradhosham, Maha Shivarathri, Navarathri, Sri Rama Navami, Hanumath Jayanthi etc are celebrated in a grand manner. This Temple is considered as a Naaga Dosha Parihaara Sthalam.
