Alamathi is located very close to Redhills in Chennai. Sri Thangavel Murugan Temple or Sri Thangavel Murugan Kudil is located on the Redhiils to Thiruvallur Road in Alamathi. This is a North facing Temple with its entrance visible from the Main Road. At the outset there is a huge Vel or Spear which is nearly 16 feet tall and of golden colour. The Gopuram of the Temple is North facing and there are Divine Idols of Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Murugan, Shivan, Parvathi etc. A Kalyana Kolam of Sri Murugan is also there. Two coloured Idols of Dwara Baalaki are seen on either side of the steps. Devotees may have to climb 6 steps to reach the Temple premises.
On entering the Temple there is a black Idol of a North facing Sri Vinayagar who is seated on a podium. To the right of this, is a Shiva Lingam which is East facing. This Shiva Lingam is known as Sri Amudeeshwarar and He looks resplendent to the eyes of the Devotees when seen with a Naagabharanam. Facing this Shiva Lingam is a Nandhi Bhagwan and a Neivedhya Peedam. Close to this is a South facing Idol of His Consort Sri Amudhambikai who is seen in a standing posture and facing Her is another Nandhi Bhagwan. To the right of the Ambal is a South facing Idol of Sri Dhakshinamoorthy and to the left of the Ambal is a South facing Idol of Sri Chandikeshwarar. The rear wall behind Sri Amudeeshwarar has embosed Idols of Sri Lingothbhavar another Shiva Lingam which was brought from the Himalayas and a Kamadhenu. The surrounding walls of this area has spectacular Images of Sri Natarajar, Sri Shivan, Sri Parvathy, Sri Maha Vishnu with Sri Mahalakshmi and the Images of Ashtalakshmi around them.
Though the main entrance of the Temple is North facing the actual Moolasthanam is seen East facing. A Vel or a Spear is seen rooted to the ground next to which is the Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam. Then there is a Wooden Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a West facing Mayil or Peacock Vaahanam mounted on an elevated podium. The threshold of the Moolasthanam glitters with the golden colour and the lightings. There is a Gajalakshmi Idol on top of the threshold leading to the Moolasthanam. There are two East facing Dwara Baalaka Idols known as Idumban and Kadamban. The Sanctum Sanctorum seems dazzling and its entire surroundings look as though it is gold plated. In the East facing Moolasthanam the Presiding Deity of Sri Thangavel Murugan is on an elevated Lotus Podium in a standing posture looking effulgently. Sri Thangavel Murugan is flanked by His Consorts who are also seen in a standing posture on their elevated Lotus Podium. It is believed that the Presiding Deity of Sri Thangavel Murugan is Omnipotent and Humane in knowing the needs of His Devotees and redressing it then and there. An Urchavamoorthy Idols of Sri Murugan flanked by His Consorts and another Urchavamoorthy Idol of Sri Subramaniyar flanked by His Consorts are seen within the Moolasthanam. Around the Koshtam of the Moolasthanam the Idols of Sri Narthana Vinayagar, Sri Gugan, Sri Dhandayudhapani, Sri Bala Shanmugar and Sri Vishnu Durgai.
On entering through the Northern entrance there is a Navagraha Sannadhi mounted on a squarish Podium and the Navagraha Sannadhi could be circumambulated. Next to this is a long West facing Podium in which Sri Saneeswara Bhagwan's Idol is seen in a standing posture with His Vaahanam. Next to this is a West facing Idol of Sri Nagathamman. Then there are seven Idols of the Sapthamathas or Saptha Kannigaigal who are as follows: 1) Brahmmi, 2) Maheswari, 3) Goumari, 4) Vaishnavi, 5) Vaarahi, 6) Indrani and 7) Chamundi. Close to the Eastern entrance is an Idol of Sri Anjaneya Swamy who is seen West facing and in a standing posture. Next to the Eastern entrance are the Idols of the 18 Siddhars viz. 1) Idaikaadar, 2) Sattainathar, 3) Konganar, 4) Pathanjali, 5) Kuthambai Siddhar, 6) Paambaati Siddhar, 7) Sundranandar, 8) Karuvuraar, 9) Vaanmeegar, 10) Dhanvanthri, 11) Korakkar, 12) Kamalamuni, 13) Machamuni, 14) Thirumoolar, 15) Ramadevar, 16) Agasthiyar, 17) Bhogar and 18) Sivavaakiya Siddhar who are all West facing.
The inner flank of the Temple have North facing Idols of Sri Ramalinga Vallalar, Sri Maha Avathar Baba or Sri Muruga Baba, Sri Shirdi Sai Baba, Sri Gayathri Devi and Sri Ragavendra Swamy. Apart from the black Idol of Sri Gayathri Devi who is seen with Pancha Mugam and 10 Hands all other Idols are made of White Marble Stones. Then there is a coloured Idols of Sri Buddha who is seen North facing and in a seated posture beneath a Viruksham. The next North facing Idol is that of Sri Samayapuram Mariamman who is seen magnificently with 10 hands. The Temple has an East facing Sub Shrine of Sri Swamy Iyyappan. Next is the East facing Idol of Sri Kamakshi Amman and close to this is the East facing Idols of Sri Swarna Agarshana Bhairavar and Sri Govindan who are seen in a standing posture. The Temple has a South facing Sub Shrine of Sri Natarajar who is seen along with His Consort Sri Sivagami Ambal. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Sankadahara Chathurthi, Shasti, Kiruthigai, Thai Poosam, Pradosham, Maha Sivarathiri, Thei Pirai Ashtami, Tamil Month of Aadi, Aippasi Annabishekam, Tamil Month of Karthigai are some of the festivals celebrated in a grand manner.
The Temple has Thulabaara facilities for the sake of its Devotees. The entire flooring of the Temple has black granites and the ceiling has lovely designs. The pillars of the Temple are beautifully designed and they together look exquisite to the eyes of the Devotees. In a nutshell those Devotees coming to this Temple would never feel like going back. The Temple has come up with the sole efforts of Thiru P.Sivakumar Swamigal who is a Retired Senior IAS Officer. Smt.Siva Shanthi, wife of Thiru.Swamy Sivakumar lends him excellent support in maintaining the Temple spick and span. They have to be lauded for their good work in upkeeping the Temple.
