The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Sampangi Pitchaaleeswarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Sivakamavalli Ambal. This place was initially called as Vamadhevapuram. It is believed that this Temple is around 2000 years old. It was built facing East and has a three tiered Rajagopuram. There is another similar Rajagopuram at the rear end of the Temple which is West facing. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vaahanam facing the Moolasthanam. The Nandhi Mandapam is located right before the Sanctum Sanctorum. Here God Shiva has five faces namely Isanam, Thatpurusham, Vaamadevam, Sathyojaatham and Agoram. This is one of the five Shiva Temple built on the banks of River Kosasthalaiyar and this represents the five faces of God Shiva.
There are two black Dwara Baalaka Idols standing guard before the Moolavar Sanandhi. The Presiding Deity of Sri Sampangi Pitchaleeswarar is seen East facing int he Sanctum Sanctorum. He is seen mounted on a circular Avudai and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. There is an exclusive enclosure for Sri Natarajar and other Urchavamoorthy Idols. The Moolavar's Koshtam has Idols of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Maha Vishnu, Sri Brahmma and Sri Durgai Amman. The Consort of this Temple is known as Sri Sivakamavalli Ambal and She is on the right of the Moolavar Sannadhi and seen East facing and in a standing posture. In the Abhaya Varadha Hasta posture. There is a small Peedam where Ambal's Feet can be seen and this is one of the rare aspect of this Temple. The inner peripheral of the Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Naalvar, Sri Ayyappan and a Navagraha Sannadhi. There are Sub Shrines for Sri Vinayagar, Sri Ayyanar who is flanked by Poorna and Pushkala, Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Sri Subramaniyar. Likewise this Temple has Sub Shrines for Sri Annamalaiyar, Sri Kailasanathar, Sri Veeabadra Swamy, Sri Bhairavar, Sri Chandra Bhagwan, Sri Surya Bhagwan and Sri Naga Devatha. Pradosham, Maha Shivarathri and Vinayakar Chathurthy are celebrated in a grand manner.
