Uthiramerur is a small Town located in Kancheepuram District. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Balasubramanya Swamy who is none other than Lord Murugan. Unlike other Murugan Temples He does not have Valli and Deivanai as His Consorts, instead Gajavalli stands beside Him in this Temple. This Temple has East facing 5 tiered Rajagopuram and is built by following the typical Tamil style of Architecture. The Presiding Deity is East facing and stands majestically more than 6 feet tall as a Swayambhumoorthy in a standing posture. Here the Main Deity is found with a tufted hair instead of his usual Crown found in other Temples. There is no Peacock or Rooster in this Temple as Lord Muruga's Vaahanam. Since this Temple was built before Lord Muruga could defeat Asuran, the Temple has an Elephant as his official Vahanam which was gifted by Lord Indiran. The West facing Idol of this Elephant can be seen near the Flag Staff or Dwajasthambam. This Temple was constructed by Pallava Kings by mining the rocks, later it was developed to it's current structure by the Chola King Jayam Konda Cholan. This Temple has Sub Shrines for Lords Vinayaka, Eshwaran, Kasi Visvanathar and recently a Sub Shrine for Lord Iyyappan has been constructed. This Temple has a huge Pushkarani named Indira Theertha Pushkarani. This Temple has Vilvam as it's Sthala Viruksham. Festivals like Skanda Shasti and Karthigai Deepam are very well celebrated here. Since Uthiramerur is located very close to Kanchipuram which is a Temple city many Devotees keep coming here all through the day. There are few small shops opposite to the Temple main entrance selling Pooja articles and flowers. The Temple does not have a stipulated car parking but any number of vehicles could be parked in an open area available near the Temple. All Pooja related work is very well taken care of by the Temple Purohit Rajappa Gurukkal and his Brothers.
