Sriperumbudur is also known by the name Thiruperumbudur and is a Industrial Hub on the outskirts of Chennai. The ancient name of Sriperumpudur in those days was Bhoodapuri. Some refer this Temple as Sri Ramanujar Temple since Sriperumpudur happens to be the birth place of the Vaishnavite Legent Saint Ramanujachariar. This Temple is believed to have been built by the Cholas but later the Vijayanagar Kings had a big hand in developing and promoting this Temple to its current level. The Temple has a seven tiered Rajagopuram with a Dwajasthambam and a Bali Peedam. The Garudalwar is seen facing the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Temple. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Lord Adikesava Perumal who is an incarnation of Lord Maha Vishnu. His Consort here is Goddess Ethiraja Nadhavalli. Goddess Ethirajavalli has a separate Shrine. The Vimanam or the roofing of the Moolasthanam was Gold plated in the year 1912. Saint Sri Ramanujar is seen in a separate Sub Shrine. The Idol of Saint Ramanujar is considered as Thaan Ugandha Thirumeni which implies that Ramanujar Himself resides in the Idol of this Temple. On festive days the Urchavamoorthy of Saint Ramanujar is carried on a palanquin all around the Temple. The Temple has several Idols depicting Narasimhar and the story of slaying Hiranyakasibhu and so some refer this Temple as Sriperumpudur Narasimhar Temple. The walls of this Temple has been beautifully painted with various Images of Lord Maha Vishnu as is found in the 108 Divya Desam Temples. The Temple has a huge Madapalli and it serves Prasadams and Annadhanams to all Devotees. The Temple does not have an exclusive Sorga Vaasal. The Temple Car was damaged and was not used for any festival till 2003 after which it has been set right and put to use annually during festive occasions. This Temple attracts lots of Devotees from far flung areas during Vaikunda Ekadesi. The Theertham or Pushkarani of this Temple is Anantha Sarasu and Bhashyakar Eri. Devotees who face difficulties in getting wedded and Devotees having skin ailments come here and it is believed that their wishes are soon granted. The Temple has a huge compound wall but with very little parking area for the vehicles. The Temple has wheel chair facilities for those requiring it.
