This Temple is also called as Thiruvekka Temple or Yathothkari Perumal Temple and it is one of the biggest Temples after Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple in Kanchipuram. Some refer this Temple as Thiruvekka Temple since River Vegavathi is known as Thiruvekka. This Temple is located in Chinna Kancheepuram or Vishnu Kanchi and is one of the oldest Temple, the other two being Sri Ulagalantha Perumal Temple and Pandavathoothar Perumal Temple. It is believed that this Temple was designed and built by the Pallava Rulers with the later contributions from the Cholas and Vijayanagara Rulers. The Temple has a majestic five tiered Rajagopuram. It is said that Poigai Alwar was born in the Lotus Tank of this Temple. The Lotus Temple Tank is situated outside the main entrance. It is also said that Goddess Saraswathi and Thirumazhisai Alwar had dreams in which the Presiding Deity of this Temple Sri Yathothkaari Perumal had appeared. There is a stone Dwajasthamabam, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram and a Garudalwar Sannadhi facing the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is a West facing Sri Yathodhkaari Perumal who is an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. He is seen in a Bhujanga Sayana Posture. He looks resplendent to the eyes of the Devotees. The unique aspect of the Moolasthanam is that Sri Son Vannam Seitha Perumal is seen in His sleeping posture with His head towards the right side resting on his left hand. This posture is the one and only of its kind and can never be seen in other Temples. Goddess Saraswathi is seen sitting at the Lotus Feet of Sri Sonnavannam Seitha Perumal in the Moolasthanam. His Consort is known here as Goddess Komalavalli Thaayar and She occupies a separate Shrine. This Temple has Sub Shrines for Sri Rama, Seetha, Hanuman, Goddess Aandal and Poigai Alwar. It is one of the 108 Divya Desam and has been lavishly praised in the Divya Prabhandham. King Kulothunga Chola was very fond of this Temple. Brahmotsavam of Sri Yathothkari Perumal, Vaikunda Ekadesi, Aippasi Thiruvonam Day are celebrated in a grand manner.
