As all know Kanchipuram is a Temple Town and the Temple of Sri Vilakkoli Perumal is situated in Thoopul in Kanchipuram Town. Thoopul in those days was a vast cultivable land where Dharbai Grass which is used abundantly for Yaagam and Homan was grown. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Vilakkoli Perumal and He is considered to be an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. Thoopul is the birth place of the ardent Sanskrit Scholor and Maha Vishnu Devotee Sri Vedantha Desikar. Hence they have included a Sub Shrine for Sri Vedantha Desigar within the Temple. Sri Thirumangai Alwar had done Mangalasasanam in Praise of Sri Vilakkoli Perumal. The Temple is considered as the 108 Divya Desam dedicated to Maha Vishnu.
The Temple has a three tiered East facing Rajagopuram. There is a tall Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Garudalwar Sannadhi looking towards the Moolasthanam. In the Moolasthanam the Presiding Deity is East facing and in a standing posture along with His Consorts Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi. The Presiding Deity is known as Sri Vilakkoli Perumal or Sri Deepa Prakasar. The Vimanam over the Sanctum Sanctorum is known as Srikara Vimanam. The Consort of this Temple is known as Sri Maragathavalli Thaayar and Her Shrine is located in the Prahaaram. The outer peripheral of this Temple has the Sub Shrines of Sri Alwars, Sri Andal Nachiyar, Sri Hayagreevar, Sri Mahalakshmi and Sri Vedantha Maha Desigar. The History behind the Temple is that Sri Brahmma was conducting an Aswamedha Yaagam and to obstruct the same and cause confusion Sri Saraswathi made the place pitch dark and the Asuras helped Sri Saraswathi in this. Knowing the plight of Sri Brahmma, Maha Vishnu came to the resque and helped Sri Brahmma by transforming Himself as light and hence He is known here as Sri Vilakkoli Perumal. The location of the Temple Chinna Kanchipuram or Vishnu Kanchi and is about 800 meters away from Sri Ashtabuja Perumal Temple. Festivals ike Aavani Festival, Honouring Desika during Margazhi, Perumal Darshan to His Garuda Vaahanam and Saint Vedanta on Vaikasi are celebrated in a grand manner.
