Sri Ekambareshwarar Temple is also known as Sri Ekambaranathar Temple and the place where the Temple is located is called as Big Kanchipura, or Periya Kanchipuram or Siva Kanchi. The Presiding Deity is called by several names such as Sri Thiruvekambar, Sri Ekambaranathar, Sri Ekambareswarar and SriThazhuvakulaintha Nathar. Many inKanchipuram areas name their Male child as Ekamban in memory of this Presiding Deity. At the outset there is a 16 pillared Mandapam after which is a 4 pillared Mandapam. The maginificent Rajagopuram is around 192 feet in height and is South facing with 9 Tiers. They claim that this Rajagopuram is the 6th tallest structure in India. Most of the Idols of this Temple is made up of rock solid stones babrring the two Dwarapaalaka Idols. The Temple is made up of more than 5 Corridors. There is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhiya Peedam or Bali Peedam and a Nandhi Vahanam within a four pillared Mandapam looking towards the Moolasthanam. The Temple has a second level Rajagopuram too. Then comes the Sub Shrines of Sri Sri Pralayathamman, Kazharchinga Nayanar, the Urachavar Sub Shrine etc. There is a Mango Tree in this Temple which is said to be more than 3500 years old and they had replanted this Mango Tree in recent years. Beneath this Mango Tree is a Mavadi Pancha Muga Vinayagr who is seen with 5 faces. Then there is a Mamvadi Kandar Sub Shrine. The Sahasra Lingam which was Worshipped by Sri Rama draws great attraction. Thre is a Sub Shrine of Sri Natarajar who is seen along with His Consort Sri Sivagami Ambal. The Temple's Navagraha Sannadhi is a much sought after Sub Shrine. Likewise there are Sub Shrines for Sri Balachandra Ganapathy, Sri Spatika Lingam, Sri Pralaya lingam, Naalvar, Sri Sekkizhar, Sri Santhana Kuravarkal, Sri Kasi Viswanathar, Sri Santhana Ganapathi, Sri Sowbhagya Ganapathy, Sri Sakthi Ganapathy, 108 Lingams, Sri Naaga Lingam, Sri Arumugam, 108 Lingam, Sri Markandeswarar, Sri Mathala Maatheswarar, Sri Kalla Kambar and the Arubathimoovar.
The Presiding Deity is called as Sri Ekambareshwarar or God of Mango since it is believed that the Deity was made out of sand near a mango tree by Goddess Parvathy. He looks resplendent to the eyes of His devotees when seen with His Kavasam. There are No Idols around the Koshtam of the Moolavar Sannadhi. Since the Idol of the Moolavar is made of sand He is always covered with the Kavasam and he looks dazzling. Abishekam is done only to the Avudaiyar and not on the Deity directly. His Consort here is known as Goddess Elavarkuzhali who Blesses her devotees from Her Shrine in a standing posture. Though the Presiding Deity is God Shiva, Sri Nilathingal Thundam Perumal also has an equal importance so far as this Temple is concerned.It is believed that this Temple of Sri Ekambaranathar was built initially by the Chola Kings. Later the Pallavas, Vijayanagara Rulers and others had a big share in promoting the temple to the next level within their means. This Temple has been praised by Naayanmars in the Seventh Century's Thevaram because of which this Temple is considered as Padal Petra Sthalam. Sri Ekambareshwarar Temple is one of the Pancha Boodha Sthalam of Lord Shiva and it is dedicated to the element Earth. This Temple is built on a whopping 25 acres of land and is considered as one of the largest Temples in the entire India. During the Pradosham, New Moon, Full Moon, Chathurthi and Mahashivarathri days special poojas are performed and Devotees from far flung areas visit this Temple on these days. This is one of the landmark Temples of kanchipuram Town. The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani of this Temple is known as Sivagangai Theertham and it looks wonderful when seen with the Neerazhi Mandapam. A holy Dip in this Sacred Tank is considered to be very Divine.
