The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Sundara Varadaraja Perumal who is none other that Maha Vishnu Himself. He Blesses His Devotees along with His Consort Goddess Anandavalli. This Temple is unique since this is a multi storied Temple and one of the few Temples to depict Maha Vishnu in standing, sitting and reclining posture. At the ground floor Sri Sundara Varadaraja Perumal is housed along with Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi in a standing posture. After getting Blessings from Him Devotees have to climb a narrow staircase to reach the first floor where Sri Vaikunda Varadhar is seated. Sri Parthasarathy Perumal preaching Bagavath Geetha to Arjuna, Sri Narasimhar and Lakshmi Varaahar can be seen on the outer wall of the first floor. Once Devotees are Blessed by Vaikunda Varadhar they can again climb the staircase to reach the top floor of the Temple where Sri Ranganathar is found to be in a reclined or Pallikonda posture over the five headed Serpant Adhisesan. Here Lord Shiva is found near Sri Ranganathar. One of the rare fact is that though being a Vaishnavite Temple there is a Sub Shrine for Sri Dakshinamoorthy here. This Temple also has a Sub Shrine for Sri Achudha Varadhar, Sri Anirudha Varadhar and Sri Kalyana Varadhar. There is a separate Shrine for Lord Hanuman located just opposite to this main Temple. This Temple was built by the Pallava Kings around 750 AD. Pallava King Nandhivarman II donated this entire town to 1200 Vedic Scholars who got settled here. This Temple was developed by Chola Kings, Vijayanagara Kings and Nayakas. The Sacred Tank of this Temple is known as Vairamegha Theertham.
