Sri Kailasanathar Temple is one of the oldest Temple in entire Tamil Nadu. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Kailasanathar who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. This Temple was built by Narashima Varman II of Pallava Dynasty between 685 to 705 AD. This Temple is made out of Sand Stone and a large number of carvings including half Animal and half Human Idols. This shows the architectural excellence of the Pallava Architecture. There are various Sub Shrines that are dedicated to different incarnations of Lord Shiva. There is a huge circumambulatory passage in this Temple. This Temple is built on the Banks of River Vegavathy and this Temple is built facing East. This Temple is located in a place called Shiva Kanchi. The name Sri Kailasanathar means Lord of Cosmic Abode. Though this Temple was built by the Pallava Kings It was the Chola Kings and Vijayanagara Rulers who developed this Temple to its current structure. Like many other Hindu Temples this Temple also has a Sanctum Sanctorum, Artha Mandapam, Rajagopuram and a high raised compound wall covering the entire Temple complex. The Vimanam of this Temple is a Pyramid shaped. The pillars of this Temple are carved with mythical animal known as Yazhi. Inside the Sanctum Sanctorum we can see the 16 sided Shivalinga which is made out of Black Granite. This Temple is a Major Tourist attraction of this city because of which lots of tourists from different parts of the world visit this Temple. Currently the Temple is administered and maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.
