Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple is located in Chinna Kancheepuram or Vishnu Kanchi in Kanchipuram. This Temple is one among the 108 Divya Desam of Maha Vishnu. This Temple is also known as Thirukkachi or Athigiri or Athigiri Varadhar Temple. The Mangalaasasanam of the Temple was done by Sri Thirumangai Alwar, Sri Boodhath Alwar and Sri Peiyalwar. This Temple has a 130 feet 7 tiered Rajagopuram which looks majestic and visible even from some distance. The Temple has several multiple pillared Mandapams with Sub Shrines in them. This Temple is deeply realted to the Indian Epics of Ramayana and Mahabharatha. The story behind this temple is that Sri Brahmma performed an Aswamedha Yagam and Saraswathy with an intent to destroy the same tried to flood and inundate it by River Vegavathy which runs through Kanchipuram. At that time Sri Varadharaja perumal who is also known as Sri Devaraja Swamy came here with all His Might in the form of several lakhs of Suns and thereby saved the Yagam from the great destruction. Another important fact of this Temple is that there is a 40 feet long Deity of Sri Athi Varadhar in Pallikonda posture which is submerged inside this Anandha Theertham and He comes out of it and Blesses His Devotees once in 40 years.
The Moolavar or the Presiding Deity of this Temple is known as Sri Varadaraja Perumal or Sri Devaraja Swamy or Sri Athi Varadhar. In the Temple's Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Varadaraja Perumal looks eye captivating with His infectious smile that would keep all His Devotees spellbound before Him. He is seen on top of an elevated Podium which is around 10 metres high with 24 steps to be reached. The Vimanam of the Sanctum Sanctorum is called as Punniya Koti Vimanam and it is bevlieved that this Vimanam keeps growing with each single Punniyam made of the Devotees. The Urchavamoorthy of this Temple is kept in a Glass Panel or Kannadi Mandapam and he is seen with Fire wound Scars on His face. The Consort of this Temple is known as Sri Perundevi Thaayar and She is seen in Her own Shrine. The Thaayar Sannadhi Vimaanam is called as Kalyana Koti Vimanam. During the time of the Moghul invasion fearing destruction the Urchavamoorthy Idol was safely sent off to Udayarpalayam near Tiruchirappalli or Trichy and was brought back safely to Kanchipuram after several decades. There is a separate Shrine for Sri Chakrathalwar near the Anandha Theertham of this Temple. A Sannadhi for Sri Malayala Nachiyar is also seen in the Temple. The Pallavas, Cholas, Cheras, Vijayanagara Rulers and the Nayaks too for their share had promoted this Temple to a great extent. The Hanging Chain of this Temple which is carved out of a single stone is avery important featrue of this Temple attracting all Devotees. The Temple is very famous for its Gouli Dosham and pertaining to this there is a Golden Lizard and a Silver Lizard on the ceiling of this Temple. People Pray to them to get rid of their Gouli Dosham. This Temple attracts enormous number of Devotees from all over the State and from other North Indian States too. Infact many Foreign Tourists coming to Kanchipuram never miss coming to this Temple and they sit for a hours together before and Idol or Image to make a replica drawing of the same. The Temple's Prasadam is very famous and is known as Kanchipuram Idli. Apart from being distributed free of cost to the Devotees, some evince interest and buy them for taking it home.
