Kanchipuram Town is the District Head Quarters and a well known Temple Town. Sri Kachabeshwarar Temple is one of the important landmark Temple of Kanchipuram. Sri Kachabeswarar was called in ancient times as Sri Kachaalai Udaya Naayanar according to the inscriptions of this Temple. The Temple is located in Raja Street of Pillayarpalayam in Kanchipuram Town. It is highly praised in the Siva Puranam. This Temple was believed to have been built by the Pallava Kings but later the Cholas and the Vijayanagara Rulers developed the Temple and had brought it to this level. This Temple is built facing East and has a five tiered Rajagopuram and there is another five tiered Rajagopuram at the entrance of the Sanctum Sanctorum. 

The Temple has a Neivedhya Peedam or a Bali Peedam, a Dwajasthambam or a Kodi Maran and a Nandhi Vaahanam looking towards the Moolasthanam. In the East facing Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Kachabeswar Swamy looks resplendent in the backdrop of the naturally lit oil lamps and is seen in the form of a Shiva Lingam. The Moolavar is in the form of a Sand Stone known as Prithvi Lingam and the rear wall of the Moolavar Sannadhi has a Sri Somaskandar Panel. The Koshtam of the Moolavar Sannadhi has Idol of Sri Vinayagar, Sri Dhakshinamoorthy, Sri Lingothbhavar, Sri Brahmma and Sri Durgai. His Consort here is known as Sri Sundarambigai and She is seen in Her Shrine in a standing posture Blessing Her Devotees.

This Temple has Sub Shrines of Sri Yoga Siddheswarar, Sri Gana Siddeshwarar, Sri Sathurmugeshwarar, Sri Natarajar along with Sri Sivagami Ambal, Sri Subramaniyar flanked by His Consorts Sri Valli and Sri Devasena. Sub Shrines for Sri Ayyanar or Sri Dharmasastha is also seen and He is flanked by Sri Poornambika and Sri Pushkala. There is a Sub Shrine for Sri Lingabeshwarar, Sri Ishta Siddeshwarar, 63 Naayanmaars, Sri Sahasra Lingam, Sri Pancha Sakthi Vinayagar, Sri Kaala Bhairavar and Sri Soorya Bhagwan. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is a Peepal Tree or Arasa Maram and there are several Naga Devatha Idols beneath it. The Sacred Tank or Pushkarani is known as Ishta Siddhi Theertham. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
