Sri Thennalagar Temple is located in a small village called Kovilkulam near Brahmmadesam in Ambasamudharam. This Temple is an ancient one and is said to be around 400 years old. This is an East facing Temple and the Presiding Deity is also called as Vinnagar Perumal. He is considered as an incarnation of Maha Vishnu. His Consorts here is known as Sundaravalli and Soundaravalli and they are found in a standing posture. The Urchavamoorthy of this Temple is known as Soundararaja Perumal. The Govt. has cited security as one of the reasons and all the Urchavamoorthy have been shifted to some other nearby Temple. This Temple has a tall Dwajasthambam with a Garudalwar facing the Moolasthanam. The initially installed Idols of this Temple were set to age and hence it is believed that a new set of Idols have been replaced in the Sanctum Sanctorum. It is believed that Sage Markendeya during his visits to many Maha Vishnu's Shrines made it a point to visit this Temple too. There is a story behind this Temple which says that a Vishnu Devotee had a wild dream in which God ordered him to visit Kalazhagar hence the Devotee brought a stone from there and installed it in his village which was called as Thennazhagar after that. Hence the God here is also praised as Sripathy Vinnagar Perumal. It is also strange that some mention this Temple as Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple. Since the Temple is built on an elevated platform and since the Devotees have to climb a few steps it is considered by some as a Maada Kovil. Many of the Idols and intricate carvings of this Temple have been damaged and seems rickety. The concerned ought to bestow personnal attention and set right these things. As a result of the aforesaid factors visitors and Devotees coming to this Temple have started dwindling down in recent days. The Theertham of this Temple is known as Markandeya Theertham. Aadi Pooram, Vaikunda Ekadesi and Garuda Sevai Utasvam are celebrated in a grand manner.
