Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple is located in Valliyur in South Tamil Nadu quite close to Nanguneri and Thirunelveli. It is located in a picturesque Mahendragiri Hills and thus this Temple earns the distinction of being the one and only Subramanya Temple built in a Cave. The Temple premises where it has been built is in the shape of a Tamil word OM. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Subramanya Swamy who is also known as Valliyur Sri Murugan. The Temple does not have a Rajagopuram but instead there is a Gopuram on top of which the Idols of Sri Subramaniya Swamy along with Valli and Devasena are found. Most Devotees who come by vehicles enter the Temple through the Northern gate.

There is a multi pillared Mandapam leading from the Northern gate to the Temple. Facing the Sanctum Sanctorum is a Dwajasthambam or Kodi Maram, a Neivedhya Peedam or a Bali Peedam and a Mayil or Peacock Vaahanam. The East facing Moolasthanam looks glittering with the Idol of Sri Subramanya Swamy along with His newly wedded Consort Valli on one side and flanked by Deivanai on the other side. There is another Sub Shrine where Sri Shanmugar is flanked on either side by Valli and Devasena. It is believed that immediately after marrying Valli, Sri Subramanya Swamy had brought Her to Valliyoor. It is said that Deivanai was so sad that She could not befriend Valli despite best efforts. Finally it is said that Sage Agasthiyar came to the rescue of Deivanai and brought them together through conciliatory talks. Sage Agasthiyar was one of the foremost person to worship Sri Subramaniya Swamy here. 

The Temple has a Rock Cut Sanctum Sanctorum with several Mandapams around it. The Temple comprises of Idols for Sri Ganapathy, Sri Sastha and God Shivan. Close to this are the Idols for the Ashta Kannigaigal. There is a Sub Shrine for Sri Jayantheeswarar and Sri Soundaryanayagi Ambal. There are Shrines for Sri Natarajar, Sri Sivagami Ambal and Sri Dhakshinamoorthy. To the right of the Sanctum Sanctorum is a Sub Shrine for Sri Kasi Viswanathar, Sri Visalakshi and Sri Saneeswarar. The Naalvar Sannadhi comprises of Sri Thirugnana Sammandar, Sri Thirunavukkarasar, Sri Sundarar and Sri Manickavasagar. Facing the Moolasthanam are the Idols of Sri Bhairavar, Sri Suryan and Sri Chandran. The Idol of Sri Aajarya Vinayagar is seen East facing. There is a East facing Ambal Sannadhi for Valli who is seen in a standing posture. It is believed that the newly wedded Valli was desperately in need of water and hence requested Sri Subramaniya Swamy for it. Since water was scarce Subramanya Swamy struck His Spear on the ground and perennial water started gushing out of it. The flooded Sacred Tank formed here due to this is known as Saravana Poigai. This Pushkarani is close to the Eastern entrance and there is a Vasantha Mandapam within this Pushkarani. A multi pillared Mandapam leads the Devotees from the Pushkarani towards the Temple premises.

Historians still believe that many of the Idols found in this Temple is around 3000 years old. There is a saying that Sri Murugan never sends His Devotees empty handed when they visit Valliyur. This is one of the rare Temples where Childless couples are Blessed with new born kids soon after they visit this Temple. Since the Temple is carved out of Rocks Devotees may not be able to circumambulate from within the Temple. The outer Pradhakshanam or Giri Pradakshanam is considered very Sacred here. There is a Sub Shrine for Sri Sangili Boothathar and Naga Devathas in this outer peripheral. There is a Temple office and a Madapalli within the Temple Premises. The Temple's Chariot is parked safely near the Northern entrance. There are several flower and Pooja Shops selling all types of Divine articles.
