This Rock Cut Cave Temple is located on the hill of Thirumalapuram in Thirunelveli District is also known as Varanasimalai. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is Sri Pasupathynatheeshwarar who is an incarnation of God Shiva. The Neolithic Tools were excavated from this place which proved that people lived here even before ten thousand years. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is in the form of a self manifested or a Swayambhu Lingam. It is evident from a cursory glance that the Lingam was anointed on a regular basis in those days. Though partially damaged Idols of Sri Vinayaka, Sri Brahmma, Maha Vishnu and Sri Nataraja are found here in this Temple. The Nandhi of this Temple is dilapidated and the murals within the Temple complex looks faded. The Monolithic Shiva Lingam hints the Pandya Style instead of Pallava Style. This Temple is unique since there are idols of Sri Brahmma, Sri Maha Vishnu and Sri Shiva. Special Poojas are offered on Prodosham, Thirukarthigai and Maha Shivarathri days. There is a huge stone pit in which Castor Oil Lamp is lit on special occasion. The Sanctum Sanctorum that has been excavated recently shows the simplicity of this Temple. In earlier days it is believed that this Temple was surrounded by Fertile Lands, Lakes, Trees and Wells.
