Kodaganallur in ancient times was also called as Kaarkodaganallur. This Temple which is located in Kodaganallur comes under Palayamkottai Taluk of Thirunelveli District. This Temple is situated in a narrow lane having a South facing entrance. This South facing gate has a small Welcome Arch is seen with a golden coloured stucco Idol of Shivan, Parvathy, Ganapathy and Murugan besides a Rishabha Vaahanam. On entering the Temple there is an East facing Anthill or Putru beneath a Neem Tree and covered with a tinsheet roofing. This Anthill is smeared with Turmeric and Kumkum all over. To the rear of this is an Idol two Serpents both intertwined. Ahead of the Anthill are a few Idols of Naga Devatha.
Though the Temple's main gate is South facing the actual Temple can be entered either through the Southern entrance or through the East facing entrance. In other words the Temple premises could be accessed in dual way. The Temple has a Nandhi Vaahanam situated outside the Temple but within an iron enclosure beneath a four pillared Mandapam facing Westwards looking towards the Moolasthanam. This Temple is very unique in many ways since there is No Rajagopuram, Kodi Maram or Dwajasthambam. Likewise this Temples does not have Idols of Dhakshinamoorthy, Chandikeshwar and Bhairavar. Similarly this Temple does not encourage Flowers or Garlands brought from outside and lighting of Ghee Lamps and Camphors too are not allowed.
On entering the Moolasthana Mandapam through the East facing entrance there is another West facing Nandhi looking towards the Moolasthanam. To the left of the threshold of the Moolasthanam is an Idol of Sri Vinayagar who is East facing. To the right is an Idol of Sri Subramaniyar with Valli and Devasena. Close to this are the twin Idols of Raahu and Kethu looking as one and She is known as Sri Anandha Gowri Ambal and this is East facing. In the Sanctum Sanctorum the Presiding Deity of Sri Kailasanathar is seen East facing and in the form of a Shiva Lingam. He looks awe inspiring and dazzling to the eyes of His Devotees. It is believed that the Presiding Deity of Sri Kailasanatha Swamy who is in the form of a Shiva Lingam was installed in this place by Roma Maharishi who was a key disciple of Sage Agasthiyar. The Ambal of this is known as Sri Sivagami Ambal. The Shrine of Sri Sivagami Ambal is South facing and She is seen Blessing Her Devotees in a standing posture. The Temple also has a few coloured paintings of Gajalakshmi and Gajendra Moksham on its walls.
There is a South facing Idol of Sri Naratajar and Sivagami Ambal in the Moolasthana Mandapam. Within the same Moolasthana Mandapam there are two huge coloured portraits of Sri Sundar Swamigal. His portraits is kept here since he was born and brought up in initial years in Kodaganallur which was then called as Karkodaganallur. The Nandhi Vaahanam of this Temple gains prominence on Tuesdays, Sundays and Pradhosham days when the Nandhi Bhagwan is decorated with Turmeric Garlands. Vinayagar Chathurthi, Aippasi Annabishegam, Arudhra Dharisanam, Masi Magam, Pradhosham, Navarathri, Maha Shivarathiri are some of the festivals are celebrated in a grand manner.
The inside of the Temple looks clean but its outer peripheral looks clumsy with faecal matters of Goats and Dogs scattered everywhere. Waste paper lay scattered all over and Dogs, Cats and other poultry gain entry to all places. In short Pooja Rituals are well taken care off but not the Temple premises. This Temple is a Sevvai (Mars) Dosha Parihaara Sthalam.
