Sri Papanasanathar Temple, Papanasam, Thirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu

This Temple is believed to be more than 1500 years old and is located on the main road in Papanasam. The Presiding Deity of this Temple is also called as Papanasa Swamy or Rudraksha Nathar and He is found in the form of a Shiva Lingam. In fact the Presiding Deity is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. His Consort here is known as Ulagammai. There is a Sub Shrine for Lord Natarajar and He has a huge fan following. The Temple has a massive seven tiered Rajagopuram which is believed to have been built by King Chandrakula Pandiya. Later the Vijayanagara Kings and the Naayak Kings took keen interest in this Temple and promoted it to this level. It is said that centuries ago Sage Urosamar let float several flowers in River Tamirabarani and the first flower from the bunch came here and stood steadfast. Hence Sage Urosamar established a Temple for Lord Shiva in the name of Papanasathar and worshipped the Deity here. This Temple is very important since it forms a series of Navagraha Temples built on the Banks of River Tamiraparani. The Agasthiyar Falls located closeby is an added attraction and apart from the normal Devotees many Tourists flock this place all through the year. The Temple lacks car parking since it is located in a congested main road. In fact many a times there occurs traffic jam on the main road leading to the Temple. Some refer this Temple as Indra Keezha Kshethram, Nava Kailasa Kshethram etc. Surya Bhagwan is given more importance in this Temple and hence the Temple is referred as Surya Kailash or Surya Kshethram. Though this Temple is not a Thevara Paadal Petra Sthalam it is known as Thevara Vaipu Sthalam. The Sthala Viruksham of the Temple is Kizha Tree and the Theerthams are Thamirabharani, Vedha Theertham, Pazhaya Papanadha Theertham. Maha Shivarathiri and Thai Poosam are some of the functions that attract an overwhelming number of Devotees from far and near. There is a widespread belief that Devotees who come and Pray here are rid of all their Sins because this God is said to be a special God for Papavimochanam.
